Dem bones and The Pirate Signal at le Girrage

A friend of mine told me about a new venue here in Grand Junction that was really “down to earth”, hosted independent artists, and best of all is free! The name of the venue is “le Girrage”.

“That’s a strange name for a venue,” I said.

“Well it is pretty applicable.”

The name is applicable because the venue literally is someone’s garage. When I arrived, there was a small group of people hanging around. I did not know anyone there so I just hung out in a corner waiting for the music to start. A small girl approached me and asked why I was standing all alone and I informed her why. She then proceeded to introduce me to multiple people in the crowd and then said:

“Everyone here is really friendly”

And indeed they were. I did not meet a single person who was not extremely pleasant. (If you are the small brown haired girl who introduced me to her friends and are reading this, thank you for your kindness.)

I was surprised at the clash of genres when I was told of the two acts that were performing. The first band was a local punk/folk band called “Dem Bones”. The second act was a rap group out of Denver called “The Pirate Signal”.

The first band to play was a local punk/folk band called, “Dem Bones.” This group is comprised of Gabriel Smith (Guitar, Banjo, Harmonica, Vocals), Dan Lauten (Fiddle/Violin), David Rowley (Upright Bass), Tayla Dewey (Back-up Vox) and Austin Martinez (Trumpet). They played at first up on the stage, but quickly moved into the midst of the crowd to have a hoedown. Dem Bones were a perfect opening act. They got the crowd pumped full of energy and closed with a strong note, covering the song “F*ck the police”, originally preformed by N.W.A.

The Pirate Signal is a two-piece band consisting of front man Yonnas, and DJ Awhat on the turntables. I was really impressed with the level of energy Yonnas puts into his performance. There were points where he was literally screaming which is unique in hip hop. The whole crowd was really amped up. There were some kids who were jumping up and down; one of whom accidentally hit their head on the ceiling.

Overall it was a fun night, with good company and great music.

I would suggest that you check out the artists and organizations listed above:
